Miscellaneous short fills for csi50 prompts. Gil Grissom and various pairings.
Title: Walking the Grid
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: csi50 001. crime scene.
Notes: (100 Words – 07 Oct 2006)
Gil surveyed the scene, carefully partitioning, counting off squares like a chessboard. Only, in this case, checkmate wasn’t the end of the game, but the beginning. He saw the endgame, with its fallen and misplaced pieces, and worked it backwards to its pristine state. That was the true game and few were masters enough to hide their strategies from him.
He gathered the clues, and retraced the paths that his opponent had made. He moved step-by-step, careful not to jump too far ahead, or anticipate too much. That was the way to be fooled, and he didn’t like to lose.
Title: Puzzles
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: csi50 002. forensics.
Notes: (100 Words – 07 Oct 2006)
When he was a child, Gil didn’t dream of becoming a forensic entomologist. He didn’t dream of becoming anything, really. He just liked figuring out how things worked, and he was very good at it.
Science held the answers. With chemistry, biology, physics, there were rules, and criteria, and even when there were exceptions, those too were clues.
Many people feared the dead, or feared their secrets. Gil had no patience for this type of superstition, even as a child. Growing up didn’t lessen his curiosity. Instead, he made it his job to find the answers and learn those secrets.
Title: Looking Glass
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: csi50 003. microscope.
Notes: (100 Words – 07 Oct 2006)
Forty times. One hundred. Four hundred. Closer and closer, he was drawn, through the looking glass, until he almost believed there was a world in a grain of sand.
The smallest secrets were laid bare, through a trick of light and glass that was better than magic. Dirt became minerals and crystals and organic material. Blood smears and tissue transformed into cells and stains and nuclei.
As he aged, Gil couldn’t always trust his sight, but with the microscope, the smallest details were always as clear as they could be. Only then, did he feel like he could really see.
Title: In Abstract
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Catherine Willows
Rating: PG
Prompt: csi50 004. love.
Notes: (100 Words – 07 Oct 2006)
Gil didn’t care for abstract concepts. He preferred evidence to interpretation and means to motive. He cared for Catherine, and she for him, but he didn’t know if either of them could call it love.
She had claimed to have loved Eddie, but he was uncomfortable reconciling what he knew of their relationship with that label. He knew that Catherine, in her unguarded moments, loved Lindsay, but such filial devotion had no correspondence between her and Gil.
There was no clear definition, no criteria, to apply, to know if this was love, but sometimes, he thought it just might be.
Title: Hatred
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: PG
Prompt: csi50 006. hate
Notes: (100 Words – 2 Nov 2006)
Gil saw the results of hate each day in his job. Love, prejudice, envy, wrath – sins and virtues alike, mauled and distorted by the human condition. It was a small step to devaluing the hated, until they were merely victims, marks, obstacles in your path.
Those who fell prey to that weakness, turned predator, walked the world and these halls sure of their superiority, secure in their hatred, inspired Gil’s own impulses toward hatred. He fought to stay calm, to make sure that they faced judgment. If he failed, he would be no better than those he challenged every day.
Title: Self-Control
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 007. anger.
Notes: Spoilers for 7×06 – Burn Out (100 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
Gil sat across from Carl Fisher and felt his skin crawl. This man represented to worst of the criminals that Gil saw everyday. He was a remourseless predator, who was unable to understand his own guilt, and who took advantage of the most vulnerable members of society, with the very acts of kindness and love that they needed and deserved to receive. That he considered it a seduction and likened it to Gil’s own needs and desires was more than Gil could stand. He couldn’t give into the anger, though, the missing kids were more important than his own feelings.
Title: Black and White
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 008. black.
Notes: (100 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
Gil straightened the black frames, with their stark contents. To him, they weren’t colorless shrines of dead insects, but snapshots of the beauty of nature, and reminders of the simplicity that could be present even in the most complex ideas. These displays helped him to relax in the ways that seascapes and art prints never could. They helped him to focus his thoughts. As his subconscious wandered, connecting the dots of his latest puzzle, his eyes travelled along their dark lines, naming their names, their biology and details. These static messengers helped him find the answers he sought.
Title: White Light
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 009. white
Notes: (100 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
Gil watched as Al pulled the plain white sheet up over the face of the young girl who lay so still on the metal table, and closed his eyes against the sight. Most Americans associated the color white with peace and purity – bridal gowns and communion dresses, fresh fallen snow- but he thought that maybe the Eastern religions and more primitive cultures had it right. White was the color of death – of pale skin that lacked the flush of life, of shrouds and even the light that puportedly flashed before eyes that would never again open to see the sun.
Title: Colorful
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Greg Sanders
Rating: G
Prompt: csi50 : 011. colorful
Notes: (100 Words – 14 Nov 2006)
Greg danced around in showgirl headresses and dayglo shirts. He drew elaborate chemical compounds on white boards and clear walls, with bright colors, then stuck the markers up his nose for a laugh. Even his hair got into the act, with its streaks and stripes, and shifting spectrum of shades.
For Gil, what made Greg so colorful wasn’t quite so obvious. It wasn’t just the personality that inspired the shennanigans that teased smiles from his impromptu audiences, and relieved his own tension. It was the way he smiled sheepishly in return, and his laughter shone from his eyes like prisms.
Title: Blood Loss
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: PG
Prompt: csi50 012. blood
Notes: (100 Words – 2 Nov 2006)
Ovoid drops. Round. Tails left or right. One millimeter. Three. Arterial spray. He thinks there should be evidence, some trail or pattern of blood spatter marring the walls and floor around him, because his heart had just been ripped, still beating, from his chest.
He was too old for them, to broken and unbent to be what either of them needed. He had made it clear to them both that he was unavailable, lacking – unwilling.
As he watched Greg hold Sara up against the wall of the locker room and plunder her mouth, Gil felt the emptiness of his loss.
Title: Human Nature
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: csi50 013. evidence.
Notes: (100 Words – 24 Oct 2006)
It is possible to hold two conflicting beliefs at the same time, where neither or both are valid, but Gil didn’t care for the dissonance. He tried, when at all possible, to not concern himself with the motives and nature of others, nor allow them to influence him, or his conclusions. He believed in following the evidence.
However, while it may not lie, it didn’t always tell the whole tale, when lacking in context. In those moments, he knew that the eividence had not failed him. He had failed, to see the whole picture. His own beliefs were his downfall.
Title: The Whole Truth
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“>: 016. oath.
Notes: Spoilers for 03×02 The Accused Is Entitled. (230 Words – 02 Jan 2007)
Gil held his breath as the defense attorney repeated her question for the third time. Her voice was soft and pitched a little high, near the upper range of his hearing, and she wasn’t facing him head-on. She was interrogating him, not holding a conversation.
He covered well. For all that he was dedicated to bringing the truth to light, he was good at hiding. He had long insisted that the evidence speak for itself. He wasn’t its voice, merely its instrument when necessary. Yet, he sat here doing the vary thing that he had tried to avoid, making himself the center of attention, like an illusionist drawing attention to the ace that had been up his sleeve.
It was the truth, with little room for interpretation, and did, as he had intended, vindicate his team and catch the murderer in his lies. However, Gil was telling lies of his own. He knew the weakness that the defense was trying to exploit, as they had with each member of his team, and he had beat them at their game, but that meant that he had played it.
The oath was “the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth,” and because of that, even as the prosecutor won and the defendant was bound over for trial, Gil new that he had lost something much more important than his hearing.
Title: A Night to Remember
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom/Sofia Curtis
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 018. partners.
Notes: Spoilers for “Formalities” (100 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
Gil watched the unfamiliar blonde stride into his crime scene, with her long legs and sexy evening gown, and almost dismissed her out of hand. However, she didn’t hold back and met him quip for quip, so he took another look. Then, she shimmied out of her dress and into a pair of standard issue overalls.
She’s intriguing and Gil wonders what her story is. They say that “the enemy of my enemy is my firend” and Gil has a feeling that when the enemy is Conrad Ecklie, that axiom just might be true. He looked forward to finding out.
Title: Indulgence
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: PG
Prompt: csi50 022. taste.
Notes: (100 Words – 07 Oct 2006)
Gil wasn’t a stranger to pleasure. Contrary to popular belief, he knew how to indulge himself, though he wasn’t overly sybaritic by nature. Overindulgence was an anathema to him. It had a tendancy to anesthetize those who fell prey to its sin. What appreciation was found in a simple glass of wine, if it was often drunk to excess? What treat was a favorite desert, if eaten with every meal? Yet, as he lay here, in his lover’s arms, he knew that this was a pleasure he could get lost in, and it would still be a new taste everyday.
Title: Miles to Go
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“>: 023. sight.
Notes: (100 Words – 02 Jan 2007)
Gil pinched the bridge of his nose as his vision began to blur around the edges. He had been going for too many hours, on too little sleep, too much caffeine and too little food. His eyes and temples ached, and very soon the tension of his neck and shoulders would become a full-blown migraine. He hoped to be home asleep in a cool, dark room before that happened, which meant he needed to find what he was looking for soon.
It was hard to concentrate and to see clearly, this case was a headache in more ways than one.
Title: Secret Language
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“>: 024. touch.
Notes: (100 Words – 02 Jan 2007)
Gil wasn’t accustomed to casual touch, careless physical contact. He had learned over the years to tolerate, and even occasionally welcome it, and even to offer it in return. Some gestures came more naturally – the laying of his hand on a shoulder or forearm to draw attention, casual brushes of proximity and sharing. Even these seemed intimate to him, though. Maybe, it was because he was used to using his hands to shape words and communicate. Maybe, when he touched someone this way, with his hands that he often used instead of his mouth it was like sharing a kiss.
Title: Nothing Overlooked
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“>: 025. smell.
Notes: (100 Words – 02 Jan 2007)
Every crime scene had its own smell, beyond the coppery tang of blood, when present, or sulfur and warm metal when a gun had been fired. Air fresheners, cleaning products, heating or air conditioner units, everyone who came or went contributed to the scent of a place.
It was one of the first things that Gil taught new CSIs. They had only their senses and brains to do their jobs, no matter how many other tools were at their disposal. Smell may not be an investigator’s most important sense, but ignoring it would be conceding the advantage to the enemy.
Title: Break
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Nick Stokes
Rating: PG
Prompt: csi50 : 026. daydream, <a href=”http://www.sand-in-my-shoes.com/ragna/RandomPairings.html”>The Almost Totally Random Pairing Generator</a>: Gil Grissom / Nick Stokes / staring into space. (100 Words – 14 Nov 2006)
Nick stood outside Gil’s office and watched as Gil seemed to be staring off into space. He shuffled the results he held, reconsidering whether he needed to bother Gil right now. If it had been Warrick or Greg, Nick might have teased them about daydreaming on the job.
There was something about the way he looked – maybe, the way he appearred so relaxed, or the small smile, that had been absent lately, and was now teasing the corners of his mouth.
Nick decided that now might be a good time to take a break, and have a cup of coffee.
Title: Malleable
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Nick Stokes
Rating: PG-13 (D/s themes implied, sort of)
Prompt: csi50 : 027. dream
Notes: (100 Words – 14 Nov 2006)
Gil knew he was being unfair, but at the same time, he knew that going easy on Nick was not the way to help him become the investigator that Gil knew him to be. He denied that he enjoyed watching Nick bristle and buck under his authority, while so obviously yearning for Gil’s approval. Nick’s disappointment turned into displays of independence and initiative, lovely displays of his spirit. Sometimes, Gil dreamed of arousing those same qualities in a much more intimate setting. Nick was gaining confidence and skills as a CSI, but Gil still had so much to teach him.
Title: No Fairytale
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Nick Stokes
Rating: PG
Prompt: csi50 : 028. nightmare
Notes: Spoilers for Grave Danger (100 Words – 14 Nov 2006)
Every night, Gil dreamt, as he had for months, of holding Nick. Except now, when he reached for Nick, he felt a thick plexiglass wall slide into place between them, and the dim light of his bedroom seemed to take on an eerie, green glow. The whimpers and moans of pleasure that Gil hoped to invoke in Nick turned to muffled screams of terror and panic.
On good nights, Gil found the magic word to rescue the prince. When Nick turned away from him instead, unable to trust, Gil would have traded his kingdom to slay all of Nick’s dragons.
Title: Light of Day
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“>: 029. day.
Notes: (100 Words – 02 Jan 2007)
Working the graveyard shift on a regular basis, especially in Las Vegas, tends to affect the rhythm of your days to the point that you can go for weeks without seeing the light of day, especially in the winter. Yet, some things are worth the effort to buck this trend, beyond court appearances and the few necessary daytime errands in a town that practically ran twenty-four hours, and as Gil looked around to see his team standing with him to watch their suspect being transported to his arraignment, instead of being home, snug in their beds, he knew they agreed.
Title: Night Shift
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“>: 030. Night.
Notes: (200 Words, double drabble – 02 Jan 2007)
When Gil was offered his choice of positions with the Las Vegas crime lab, he chose the night shift, much to the consternation of the u ndersheriff who interviewed him. He knew that they had hoped to have him on the first shift, there to be a face for the press, to “advertise” their newest acquisition – your tax dollars at work – in the fight to clean up the crime in this postcard perfect town. They didn’t know him very well, and didn’t seem to realize that his resume showed no aptitude for politics, nor did his actual job description require one.
He took the night shift because he saw the need, and because no one else seemed to want it. He could be useful there, while avoiding the more tedious ‘responsibilities’ of his chosen career. As time passed, others were attracted to the night shift, each for their own reasons, and he had a good team working with him, then for him. Even if the powers that be still had any desire to have him anywhere else, now that they did know him and his lack of ambition and tact, Gil wouldn’t have gone. The night shift was where he belonged.
Title: Heat
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 031. hot
Notes: (100 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
Gil felt the heat radiate through the layers of his clothing, and the sweat dripped along his skin and soaked through his clothes. Not even the wide brim of his hat could protect him from the bright heat that beat down from overhead and relected back up from the wide expanse of sand that surrounded them. Still he pushed on, barely stopping to drink enough water to keep himself from sufferring the effects of the sweltering heat. He couldn’t let the heat slow him down, because somewhere out here was someone who was truly at its mercy, and needed him.
Title: Cold Case
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom/Jim Brass
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 032. cold.
Notes: Spoilers for “The Execution of Catherine Willows” (100 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
His thought full of death, blue paint, insects and camoflage, Gil accepted the drink from Brass. He and Jim both knew that they had reached an end in this case, and not even the smooth burn of the whiskey could penetrate the chill inside of him as this monster successfully eluded them, leaving behind a trail of dead co-eds. They knew that he would strike again, and again, until he made a mistake or was ready to be caught. At times like this, Gil felt like a small pice of him turned to ice with each case that went cold.
Title: : Control
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Lady Heather
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: csi50 : 036. jealousy, <a href=”http://www.sand-in-my-shoes.com/ragna/RandomPairings.html”>The Almost Totally Random Pairing Generator</a>: Gil Grissom / Lady Heather / beguiled
Notes: Mild spoilers for Slaves of Las Vegas. (150 Words – 4 Nov 2006)
She had held his attention from the first moment he saw her standing in the foyer of her dominion. Gil knew that he wasn’t the first to fall under her spell, and the teasing smile she gave him confirmed it.
She was solicitous and helpful, obviously caring for those in her care, and she quickly analyzed and accepted his team as well – even gruff, confrontational Brass. She gave them complete access to her world and home, and helped them find their way, where she could of hindered them, or let them falter. She was a master of her vocation. She stayed in control, while bringing out the best in others, and guiding them to realize their potential, while making them think it was their own idea.
He didn’t want to be just another who had fallen under her spell. He wanted to be the one to make her lose control.
Title: Proof of Life
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom/Nick Stokes
Rating: PG
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 037. life.
Notes: Spoilers for “Grave Danger” (100 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
Gil had been doing this for a long time, and was familiar with the rules for working a kidnapping. One of the first things you did was ask for proof of life. It was meant to put the perp on the defensive. get him to reveal inadvertant clues, while trying to prevent, if possible, the case turning from kidnapping to murder, if it hadn’t already. He had never seen anything like this. They could have their proof, as often as they liked, to mock them with their failure, and to distract them from the task at hand, prolonging Nick’s torture.
Title: Requiem
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Jim Brass
Rating: G
Prompt: csi50 038. death.
Notes: (238 Words – 24 Oct 2006)
A heavy mist had settled over the city for the last few days, and the rising temperature had done little to dissipate it. The rising humidity made Gil thankful that this was a morning service. The jacket of his suit was an uncomfortable weight, and he could see Jim stiffly bearing his heavy, wool, formal uniform beside him. However, neither of them complained of removed the offending articles, despite the fact that the service had concluded almost an hour ago. Instead, both of them quietly strolled along the decorative path that wound through the cemetery and was appointed like an elaborate desert garden.
It wasn’t the first time that they had made this journey together, and they both knew that it wouldn’t be the last, unless the next time one of them walked it alone. They kept their silence, as they walked, and didn’t share false platitudes of regret or faith. Those were better expressed between alcohol and invective. This was a place of putting things to rest, of leaving them behind.
Tomorrow would be a new day, and that was a promise kept, as the storm that had been brewing finally broke overhead, washing down on them. They looked over at each other, and Jim gave him an “it figures” look, but they didn’t speed up, or turn off the path. They walked its entire length, from beginning to end, holding their silence as warmth between them.
Title: Oblivious
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: PG
Prompt: csi50 039. secret
Notes: (100 Words – 2 Nov 2006)
Greg doesn’t understand how Gil can be so clueless about the effect he has on people. He’s a brilliant man, capable of seeing things that Greg has trouble understanding even after they are pointed out to him. However, Gil constantly misses the longing, admiring glances that are sent his way, and the way that half of the people that work with him are half in love with him. He doesn’t know if Gil’s ignorance is willful or misguided, but it adds to his charm. Besides, Greg likes knowing something that Gil doesn’t know.
Someday, Greg might just tell him anyway.
Title: Photographs
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 040. pictures
Notes: (100 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
Gil looked over the pictures spread out on the table before him, and the panaramic view that they presented of the crime scene. Each one was a piece of the puzzle, fitting together like a jigsaw. Except in this, each piece was more than the whole. Somewhere, in this exhibit, was a clue to solving the case and make sense of it, at least in terms of evidence, but nothing would ever explain the nature or motive of such a thing, and a thousand words would never be enough to explain the reality, no matter how many pictures they took.
Title: Hard Lines
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom/Nick Stokes
Rating: G
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 041. hard.
Notes: (150 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
On the outside, there is nothing soft about Nick Stokes. He is all hard lines and angles, from his square jaw, to the ironed sharp creases in his shirts and pants, and Gil wonders how long this former cop can last in an environment that seems to wear the hardest on those who don’t know when to give a little under pressure. Still, he takes him onto his team, and helps show him the ropes.
Six months later, he’s lifting a beer, along with Jim and Catherine, aknowledging that Nick has passed all of his level one proficiencies and is holding on better than Gil had given him credit for. He reconsiders his opinion, and realizes that Nick does has some hard edges – they all do – but some of those are just armour hiding the softer parts of the real Nick, who might just make a good CSI after all.
Title: In Dreams
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 042. soft and <a href=”http://www.sand-in-my-shoes.com/ragna/RandomPairings.html”>The Almost Totally Random Pairing Generator</a>: Gil Grissom / Sara Sidle / in bed.
Notes: (100 Words – 03 Jan 2007)
Gil reached across the bed to where Sara lay next to him, her breath soft and even in her sleep. Her top had ridden up to expose her belly above her shorts, and he watched as the smooth, tanned skin rose and fell with each breath. It had taken so long for him give into the feelings between them, that it was hard to believe that he was here, barely inches away from the desires that he had denied for so long. He stroked the soft expanse of her skin, and gave silent thanks that she had waited for him.
Title: Scars
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Greg Sanders
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: csi50 : 043. dark, <a href=”http://www.sand-in-my-shoes.com/ragna/RandomPairings.html”>The Almost Totally Random Pairing Generator</a>: Gil Grissom / Greg Sanders / scars
Notes: (150 Words – 14 Nov 2006)
The sun has already risen by the time Greg knocks on the door to Gil’s loft, but none of the light penetrates the heavy, chocolate brown, blackout drapes, or touches either of them, as they retreat to his bedroom.
There is a lamp on each of the bedside tables, and a light fixture and fan hanging overhead, but Greg won’t let him turn any of them on. He won’t even allow the ambient glow of the sixty-watt bulb in the connecting bathroom to penetrate this cave. He had frozen in place, clutching the covers to himself the one time that Gil had pretended to forget to turn it off.
Greg shied away from the light, trying to hide the scars that he thought disfigured him, and made him unworthy of Gil’s attentions, but he was ripping Gil to pieces in the process, and leaving him with scars of his own.
Title: Reprisal
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Lady Heather
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: csi50 044. light.
Notes: (100 Words – 24 Oct 2006), Spoliers for: Pirates of the Third Reich
The unforgiving glare of the headlights cast Heather in a brittle light. Gil understood her need for vengeance, for pain, in return for an act that could never truly know justice, but she had been the one falling apart beneath her lash, not the monster splayed before her. He felt her tremble in his arms, as he his team secured the scene. She may hate him, once again, when the sun rose, but for now, he would try to hold her together, beneath the moonlight.
He would be strong for her, now, for all the ways he had failed before.
Title: Las Vegas
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: G
Prompt: csi50 045. city.
Notes: (150 Words – 24 Oct 2006)
When he had first moved to Las Vegas, Gil hadn’t expected to stay long. The city was garish and bright and jarring to his senses. However, it had been a good offer, and offered him an unique climate in which to further his experiments, with the dry desert climate, the marsh-like areas near Lake Mead, and the mountains all within range.
After a while, he realized that those garish displays had a purpose, likes an elaborate courting display, similar to those of his beloved insects, attracting the masses. The city was a crucible of civilization and the ultimate illustration of Darwin’s theory of natural selection. Those who didn’t adapt, couldn’t thrive, were ground down with gritty sand and harsh desert winds until they gave up or got out.
Gil wasn’t one to crumble under pressure. Instead, he carved his out own niche in the unforgiving landscape, and called it “home.”
Title: Riding in Cars
Author: syrenslure
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom / Warrick Brown
Rating: R
Prompt: csi50 : 046. vehicle, <a href=”http://www.sand-in-my-shoes.com/ragna/RandomPairings.html”>The Almost Totally Random Pairing Generator</a>: Gil Grissom / Warrick Brown / backseat
Notes: (150 Words – 14 Nov 2006)
Warrick had a thing for classic cars, and liked to use the excuse of not wanting to be too obvious about their relationship to rent cars from different lots around town for their more formal dates. So, when he showed up at Gil’s loft in a powder blue and white Bel-Air convertible, Gil had smiled, but not been surprised.
However, when Warrick drove them up to the overlook and set the emergency brake, his curiousity was peaked, and quickly rewarded, when Warrick reached for him and began whispering hoarse suggestions of just what he wanted Gil to do to him, in this car, under the stars, as he unbuttoned Gil’s shirt.
The front seat was awkward for two grown men, but the backseat was wider and more accomidating, as Gil spread Warrick, face down onto the leather seat and fucked him hard and fast, just like Warrick begged him to.
Title: Bright Eyes
Author: <lj user=”syrenslure”>
Fandom: CSI, Gil Grissom
Rating: PG-13
Prompt: <lj user=”csi50“> 048. writer’s choice, and for <lj user=”slash_girl“> who got the prompt “I get a little bit terrified but then I see the look in your eyes” from <a href=”http://syrenslure.livejournal.com/79735.html “>this meme</a>, and requested Gil/Warrick

Gil held his coffee cup in both hands and looked across the table to where Warrick was sprawled out comfortably across the couch. He knew why he was here, why he wanted to be here, but he also knew that he could set the mug down on the table and make his excuses to leave, and Warrick would let him. This whole terrifying situation would be over before it ever began.
He didn’t want that; it had just been too long and too hard to easily give in to his desires.
A moment later, as if he had read his mind, or the tense lines of his posture, Warrick sat up and placed his hand on Gil’s over the top of the cup. His softly spoken, “Gil,” caused him to look up into the other man’s bright eyes. What he saw there shattered any last doubts Gil may have had, and he let go of the mug to take Warrick’s hand in his own, and lift it to his lips.
They made their way across the living room, to the door of Warrick’s bedroom, and Gil found himself pressed up against the door, as Warrick captured his mouth with his own, coaxing, and asking the question that neither of them had voiced. Gil felt his tension fade, and be replaced by a passion. He responded eagerly, and pressed back against the hard length of the man who would soon be his lover. He had no desire to turn back now.

They’ve been working together for almost twelve years when Gil wakes up from surgery to see Brass sitting beside his bed, holding his hand, looking like he hadn’t slept in the thirty-nine hours since Gil had been shot. There are lines around Jim’s eyes and mouth that he scarcely remembers being their before, and he readily agrees when Jim mutters they are both getting too old for this shit.
He remembers, all too well, when Jim had been on this side of the bullet, and thinks it might be time they had more between them than matching powers of attorney.

As the walls shook around him, Gil thought that he felt the explosion before he heard it. It wasn’t that it was beyond the range of his hearing. He likely would have heard it even if he had been almost completely deaf, as the concussive wave reverberated through the whole building. However, as he had accustomed himself to the loss of his hearing, he had become more reliant on his other senses to provide clues about his environment, even to the point of sublimating the input of his hearing, even when it was working, because it was faulty and unreliable.
However, whatever warning he had, it wasn’t enough, and only served to reinforce the idea that confining himself to the lab wasn’t enough, wasn’t safe. As he scrambled to follow the rescue workers and account for his team, he knew that he couldn’t go on ignoring his loss any longer.

Gil saw Greg as the rescue workers first found him. He was pale and drawn with pain. Even unconscious, he flinched as his body fought its instinct to withdraw and curl in on itself. His back was a shredded mess of burnt skin, cuts, and remnants of his shirt and lab coat. Despite the carnage, there was very little blood, as many of the cuts had fused from the heat, some trapping slivers of glass in their depths. Everything looked clear, white, and so very bright. That was what bothered him the most – Greg wasn’t supposed to be so colorless.

The initial recovery from the explosion went fairly quickly. The few injured were secured and treated. The area was made safe and cleaned, while an investigation was started into the cause and repercussions of the accident.
Shortly thereafter, the repairs and remodeling started, and even that seemed to go quickly – most likely a combination of politics and the looming Las Vegas summer. It was if they worked as fast as they could to remove all evidence of the mishap, with new structures and rules shoehorned into the old.
However, some scars remained, sloppily patched, if you knew where to look.
